National Nursing Week in Canada is happening May 8-14, 2023, and as a team of healthcare leadership coaches (some of whom are former nurses themselves), we’re excited to celebrate!

Each year, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) organizes a variety of ways for nurses and their communities to commemorate, connect and celebrate the profession.

Here are four ideas for celebrating with your team this year:

1) Celebrate your team on social media

If the nurses on your team are active on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter or other channels, use #IKnowANurse to share what makes them great! Tag individuals or just talk broadly about the team you work with.

Post ideas:

  • Share an anecdote about a time a team member went above and beyond
  • Raise awareness about the issues your team deals with every day
  • Write about some of your favourite parts of working with nurses and/or as a nurse yourself

You can also use #CNA2023 #OurNursesOurFuture #IKnowANurse #NationalNursingWeek #IND2023 #Nurses2023 and #VoiceToLead to amplify your post.

2) Decorate your workspace with CNA’s promotional materials

Each year, the CNA puts together posters and customizable PowerPoint templates for the public to use for free. Download the promotional package from the National Nursing Week website and print out posters to display at your workplace.

3) Take the opportunity to show your appreciation

While you appreciate your team all year round, it’s easy to neglect showing gratitude as part of your daily routine. On National Nursing Week, take the opportunity to really express your appreciation for the nurses on your team. Even something as simple as making an effort to wish everyone a Happy National Nursing Week can go a long way towards lightening the mood and building a positive culture.

4) Seek opportunities to grow as a healthcare leader

One of the best ways you can honour the nurses on your team is by making an effort to become a better leader.
