We all hold beliefs about our life circumstances and about ourselves that affect the way we perceive and interact with the world around us. These beliefs often have deep roots based on messaging received from others, as well as our previous experiences. We hold these beliefs as true, and they are powerful driving forces in our life. However, these beliefs are generally constructed from our own repeated thought patterns. We tell ourselves stories that, unconsciously, become our truth. The stronger these beliefs, the more “evidence” we find to support them.

Limiting beliefs are those that we believe to be true that are holding us back personally and professionally, essentially creating boundaries. Limiting beliefs are unique to each person, however, they often are centred on ideas of not being enough, not having enough, not deserving enough, how others perceive us, and how the world works. The consequences of these thoughts can be unbelievably damaging to our lives and the potential we hold. Have you ever considered how your limiting beliefs may be holding yourself back? If not, coaching may be a great opportunity for you to be bold and to change your self imposed limitations.

Here are a few ideas to get you started in minimizing the impact of your own limiting beliefs.

  • Question: Take time to question your limiting beliefs. Where did they come from? What feelings are evoked when thinking about these beliefs? Think about the roots of your limiting beliefs, and question the “evidence” that you have attached to each belief.
  • Challenge: Challenge your limiting beliefs. Ask yourself about the value that you have placed on the beliefs and reflect on the impact that your limiting beliefs have on your life.
  • Reframe: Reframe your thinking about your limiting beliefs. What are your assumptions about these beliefs? Counter the belief by thinking of specific circumstances in which the belief has proven to be unfounded.
  • Let Go: Let go of your limiting beliefs. This is challenging, given our natural attachment to our beliefs. Dare yourself to ask how these beliefs have served you. What do you need to do to detach yourself from these limiting beliefs? How can letting go of the beliefs free you to dream of possibilities?

Don’t hold yourself back. Digging deep into, and confronting, our limiting beliefs often requires awareness, courage, and a new mindset. Seize the opportunity to reach your potential! Contact us to learn more about how we can help you challenge your limiting beliefs!
